Shiver me timbers! It’s time to batten down the hatchet and raise the jolly roger, for September 19th marks International Talk Like A Pirate Day. And whether a landlubber or an old salt ye be, we’ve got plenty of ideas on how you can celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day 2019 in true buccaneer style.
What is Talk Like A Pirate Day?
Talk Like A Pirate Day is a parodic holiday that started out as a joke between two mates. On June 6th, 1995, John Baur and Mark Summers (or, as they now like to call themselves, Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy) had been enjoying one of their regular games of racquetball. When Baur strained to reach a low shot, he let out a cry of ‘arrrgh’. Everything they said to each other from the moment until the end of the game was in pirate slang.
That game started a tradition of talking to one another like pirates for one whole day of every year, just for a laugh. Baur and Summers kept the tradition between themselves for seven years, before working to make Talk Like A Pirate Day an officially recognised holiday, to add a little more fun to the lives of people across the world.
Obviously, they couldn’t keep Talk Like A Pirate Day as June 6th, as that’s D-Day. So Summers called out an alternative, the first date to pop into his head: September 19th, which just happened to be his ex-wife’s birthday. Talk Like A Pirate Day has been celebrated officially every September since 2002.
