When it comes to loading your dishwasher correctly, there are different ways of doing so depending on which model you have (if in doubt, consult the manual for the best way to load the machine). Here are a few tips that apply almost universally:
The dirtiest surfaces should be aimed downwards, towards the wash arms. It may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning because we’ve all seen dishwashers with cups and bowls stacked upside down. Unorganised dishes are not only incompletely cleaned, but bowls and ladles can end up filled with dirty contaminated water. The good news is that you can stack bowls closer than you think. It should be fine as long as the water can pass through. For a Fully Integrated Dishwasher, visit wellingtonshomeelectrical.co.uk/dishwashers/fullsize-dishwashers/fully-integrated.html
Forks and spoons in a standard silverware container should be oriented so that they are less likely to nest together. Knives are better pointing down so that you don’t stab yourself. Items such as wooden spoons or spatulas with wood handles, and any other utensils that are not dishwasher-safe, should never be put in the dishwasher. They can be damaged and so will your machine if you run them through. A filter is designed to handle food.
It’s best to avoid putting super-crusty dishes on the corners of upper racks because they are the weakest in terms of cleaning. Make sure you don’t block the upper spray arm when you load large pots, pans or trays (that you’ve double-checked to be dishwasher safe).
