WhatsApp enables two-step verification for more security: What it is and how to activate it?

WhatsApp continues to launch new products in order to make the competition more difficult task. Thus we have seen new features to improve communication with our contacts, but an important issue is safety, where it seems that WhatsApp begins to take things seriously.

In April this 2016 WhatsApp incorporated the encryption end to end, a feature that allowed our conversations were safer since even before that WhatsApp security simply did not exist as in other market options. Today the messenger wants to continue along this path and announced the two – step verification, an additional layer of security that seeks our own WhatsApp not so easily breached.

Verification in two steps but not how we know it

The two – step verification reached by the time the beta version on Android (and Windows Mobile), and can be activated via the following path: Settings> Account> Verification in two steps> On.

After activating the function have to enter a six – digit code, which will be our key when we need to activate our account WhatsApp (related to our phone number) in another mobile as well as an email account (optional), which Will disable the verification in case we forget the code.

It’s funny how WhatsApp has chosen two – step verification through a code that must recoder, when most of the services offered by the method this option is to do it via SMS, which somehow gives added security when entering To a service, since we will know that we are actually asking for it, something that with a code may not work like this.

The rationale for this decision is that WhatsApp already makes a verification telephone number to activate the service on a mobile, verification using either an SMS or a phone call, so activate this method for two – step verification would be redundant.

Although this could be good news for our security in WhatsApp, you have to pay attention to detail, as the company states that the mail account will not be verified, so they ask us to review that we have written either direction , Because in case of error we will not be able to recover our account, which will lead to its blockade. In addition, the option to provide an email to disable 2-step verification is not required.

Another important point is that if we want to register our number but we do not have the code and we do not provide mail, we will not be able to activate our WhatsApp account until seven days have passed. After these seven days we will have the opportunity to register in WhatsApp without the code, but we will not receive the pending messages. And if 30 days pass without entering the verification code, our account will be completely restarted as if it were a new user.

Finally, WhatsApp mentions enable two – step verification receiving periodic requests to enter the code and so let us not forget, something that is no way to disable unless you deactivate the function completely.

With this new security layer WhatsApp seeks to reduce the risks of phishing, since now if someone wants to activate our number to access our messages must first verify via SMS or call and also introduce this new verification code.
